ORI

Bring the number that tells the state where your results go

An ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) is issued by FDLE and identifies the agency requesting your background check and the purpose of the check. Without it, the request cannot be processed and the requesting agency will not receive your results.

Level 1 is name-based. Level 2 is fingerprint-based

A Level 1 screening is a name-based check that includes statewide criminal records through FDLE and a check of the national sex offender public website. A Level 2 screening is a fingerprint-based check run through both FDLE and the FBI, and applies to positions of responsibility or trust.

FAQ

Common questions

Will I get a copy of my background check results?

No. Under FDLE rules the results of a fingerprint-based criminal history record check go to the agency or entity that requested the screening — not to the Live Scan provider that captured the prints, and not to the individual being fingerprinted. If you need a copy of your own record, request it from the requesting agency or from FDLE directly.

What is an ORI number, and why do I need one?

An ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) tells the system which agency or program your fingerprints belong to, so your results are routed to the right place. Whoever asked you to get fingerprinted — an employer, a licensing board, a state agency — issues it. Bring it with you: without the correct ORI the submission can be sent to the wrong recipient or rejected.

What should I bring to my fingerprinting appointment?

A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, and the ORI or program information from whoever requested the screening. If a form, case number or applicant ID was provided to you, bring that as well.

How long does it take to get cleared?

Processing time is set by the agency receiving the results, not by the Live Scan provider. Capture and transmission happen during your appointment; everything after that is the receiving agency's timeline. Ask the agency that requested the screening what to expect.
